The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Premier Spot.

Initially, Lux may look more like a difficult scholarly examination than the latest popular music record from a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop icon. Divided across four separate parts and voiced in 13 languages, we have a dizzying symphonic work exploring feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, often via the prism of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—soars upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a long list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone makes the efforts of other pop stars look quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to alchemize the past and the present, the scale are far greater here, and the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is a core spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of Lux is that you rarely exactly know—nor want to predict—where it will go to next."

Almost every track finishes at a totally different place from how it began. A track explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on Lux is straddling the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spirals upward. That trick is repeated by a different expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes time to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
