We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
