"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The group are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global following.

However the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
